Lower Back Tattoo Designs: Been There Done That or Still Cool?

17th February 2009

Tattoos are very personal things. They can be designed to convey an individual meaning or they can be a spur of the moment purchase. But one thing remains the same regardless of the reason behind getting a tattoo: for the most part, they are permanent. That’s why it’s a bit unnerving to see girls that get outlandish lower back tattoo designs.

That is not to say that getting a tattoo on your lower back is a no-no. Quite the contrary. There are numerous lower back tattoo designs that perfectly complement the curves of the lower back. Tribal designs and Celtic knot work often suit this area well.

But this doesn’t diminish the fact that tattoos on the lower back, especially on women, have gained a notoriously negative nickname: the “tramp stamp.” We’ve all heard it by now and it is definitely not something you want connected to your name after shelling out a pretty penny on a tattoo.

But I think there is still a case to be made for lower back tattoo designs. For starters, they look great, especially on women. They follow the curves of the back in such an elegant way. Of course, it is imperative that the right sort of design is selected.

Besides the type of design selected, you also have to concern yourself with the size of the tattoo. A tattoo on the lower back shouldn’t be so large that it looks garish, but it shouldn’t be so small that it looks like a mole, either. A good way to overcome tattoo size regret, is to thoroughly look over the transfer of the tattoo before committing it to ink. If you don’t like how it’s positioned or the size, speak up!

Honestly, this is probably one of the biggest areas where people run into problems when getting a tattoo. This is because they either don’t want to waste the tattoo artist’s time or feel uncomfortable speaking up when they’re not happy. Either way, it’s a problem, because not putting your foot down when you notice the tattoo isn’t the right size or not located where you’d like it to be can mean you wind up with an end result you’re not pleased with.

Lower back tattoo designs are quite often spur of the moment decisions. But this is certainly not the case for all. In fact, many people spend a considerable amount of time developing their tattoo designs. It all has to do with the very permanence of the medium. When you’re having something permanently committed to your body, it is imperative you take more than a moment to consider the implications. Sometimes, it’s helpful to ask yourself a few questions about the tattoo before committing to the design, such as:

-    Do I love this design?
-    What does it say about me?
-    Will I love this design in ten years?

Of course, you can’t reasonably answer whether or not you’ll love the tattoo in the future, but if it represents who you are in some way, then you’re odds are pretty good the lower back tattoo designs you’ve chosen are something you can be proud of for many years to come.
